Exempt Goods Cut Approved In Senate Action
A bill to cut duty free imports from 500 to 100 dollars on goods Americans bring home was approved in a voice vote by the Senate. An amendment adds 2200 dollars of goods duty free from the Virgin Islands, with the change to last until June 30, 1963 before returning to 500 dollars. Treasury officials say the measure could trim the potential 19 billion dollar trade deficit by up to 150 million. The text notes a historic reference to the Arsenal of Venice.
