Fifty Years Ago Storm Tragedy Near High Knob Farm
During a severe storm at the Calvin Whipp farm near High Knob, George Summers was sheltering with his foot on a wagon hub when a lightning bolt struck killing the driving horse. Summers suffered only numbness. the bolt also killed a steer. Whipp, with an arm over a steer, was unshocked. Rain flooded Frederick streets, creeks rose near Carroll Creek and Bentz street, and railroad tracks were flooded for the first time in years. Roadways washed out as surveyors began work near Frederick toward Middletown. The Summers incident occurred as local news noted the 190% graduating class photo and camping near the Monocacy.
