The French citizens of New York marked the hundredth anniversary of the Bastille fall with a grand reception and concert at Washington Park. Karve Hall was decorated with banners and colors as Consul General Brumwaert received guests, with Henry Maillard delivering the welcome address.
The document collection includes letters from President Carnot Ferdinand de Lesseps and ex presidents Cleveland Harrison and Morton praising the Bastille’s fall and Franco American friendship. Boulangists in London and Baltimore events mark centennial observances with protests and speeches. In Charleston, ministers condemn the McDow verdict while church groups denounce adultery and murder.
A crowded Vine Street cable car car 307 toppled toward the power house as brakes failed and grip leaves snapped. Passengers panicked and leapt to safety. The deaths include Mrs William Telgats and Mrs S Keller. injuries and unknowns follow. The second item reports a labor dispute resolution between Amalgamated and Carnegie Phipps Co with wage scales tied to steel plate production and a 23 percent average pay cut.
In Pittsburgh on July 13 a mud bank collapsed at the Sohe Street sewer. Two workers were killed and three injured as they were swept by water through the main sewer into a valley. William Daily was found dead, Andrew N. McGregor died, and Robert Munn the foreman was seriously injured. William McClay and Joseph Mearthy were badly bruised with bodies mutilated by the torrent. No one blamed for the accident.
Baltimans July 15 a waterspout tore through Herring Run and Moore's Run near Mailinory sweeping away bridges and stores. Drowned are Powell and Schresnekel, with George Lingenfelder family among those injured. Widespread ruin hits crops, roads, and rail lines. bridges on Ford and Belair roads destroyed. Hall's Springs area flooded. Other storms across Vermont and Nevada report lightning damage and deaths.

In Mexico on July 25 two high society figures connected to German officials died after personal crises. Lady Acton, sister of Count von Arco Walter, drowned herself in Tegernsee after recent signs of mental distress, possibly linked to bereavement. Count Waldemar von Blumenthal, Prussian military attaché, shot himself in a suspected lover’s dispute.
Mrs. Wilson of Lathem Street faced a neighbor Feeny after a gunshot killed her pug. Feeny fired at the dog in a cellar window, then reload and fired again, narrowly missing Mrs. Wilson as the dog was killed in her arms.
