Maryland dairy farmers urged to shift to feed grain and off farm sales
Maryland extension expert Dr. John Wysong argues dairy farms can diversify to ease economic strain. With strong feed grain supplies and Port of Baltimore access, farmers can profit from selling excess feed grains and oilseed crops off farm. Improving labor, housing, and feeding efficiency, plus better cattle and feed rations, can lower cost per unit and sustain operations amid financial adversity.
