Japs Try New Tactic In Saipan Battle
Marine Corps dispatch describes a dawn assault by Japanese commandos on a Fourth Marine Division artillery unit in Saipan. Outposts misidentified the attackers as Marines, but a firm challenge and swift fire repelled them. In two hours of fighting 123 Japanese were killed, two Americans died, and 15 were wounded. Staff Sergeant Cleveland Nelson Parks and Warrant Officer Carl P. Haynes led counterfire. Sergeant Harry L. Wappler Jr. and Private First Class Francis F. Mariano helped hold the left flank and carry ammunition amid heavy fire. The Japanese, veterans armed with rifles, swords, and gear, included officers in their ranks.

In Memoriam Milyard Two Years Gone
In loving memory of John W. Milyard who died two years ago. God saw the road was getting rough and gently closed his eyes. His weary hours and pain are past. His worn-out frame has found sweet rest at last. Gone dear father, gone forever. We miss your smiling face and the happy home we once enjoyed. Death has left a loneliness the world cannot fill.
