Obsolete battleships to be broken up or used as targets
The Navy Department plans to scrap twelve aging battleships or repurpose them as targets. The vessels, once famed in the Spanish American War and world cruises, include the Oregon, Massachusetts, Indiana, Iowa, and others, with later ships forming the 1898 1901 steel navy core. After World War I they were retired to yards or scrapped, and the Oregon has been offered to Oregon state for possible use.

Historic ships kept safe rather than scrapped says naval officers
The Commonwealth will retain and maintain the old sea fighters as monuments or pensioners of history. Some aid ships will be broken up for copper and brass to fund newer vessels. Iconic ships like Olympia and Brooklyn may be placed out of commission but not scrapped, with officers opposing total disposal.
