Universal life insurance gains popularity in tax law era
John Cunniff reports that universal life insurance blends death benefits with cash value investing and tax breaks. The policy, praised by United Business Service, could align with new tax law, offering benefits similar to traditional life insurance as cash value grows, though consumer understanding remains limited.

Universal life policies enter insurance market push
Insurance firms promote universal life, a flexible policy allowing variable premium timing and adjustable death benefits. Cash value grows with short‑term investment returns, offering a savings account linked to money market performance, while risk remains from high penalties and market volatility.

FCC limits local cable rate controls in deregulation push
The FCC ruled that state and municipal governments cannot force cable operators to carry nonlocal services on a basic tier or regulate single channel rates. The decision, covering Nevada and New Jersey cases, broadens operator flexibility and drew swift criticism from local officials and the National League of Cities. Officials warn of potential court challenges and stalled deregulation legislation. Separately, labor data show 342,000 first-time unemployment claims the week ending June 30, with 2.35 million on regular state benefits and the insured rate steady at 2.7 percent. Alaska and several other states lead insured unemployment. Market reports note technical issues with the News-Post computer system.
