Bentz Building Sheds Light On Frederick Businesses
The Bentz Building housed diverse Frederick ventures from the 1800s to mid 20th century. David H Smith operated books and stationery, later expanding beyond, while Harry F Shipley built a prominent trade in stationery and sporting goods with partners and successors shaping the street’s commerce. The Rosenour family owned the site before 1972, and dental dentist Dr. Noah Kefauver used the second floor, later the building changing hands to the Rovin and McCutcheon families, hosting an antique business at Frederick Galleries.
