Negroes Demand Rights in Railway Accommodations
The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled rail carriers must serve all first class passengers equally, white or black. A Louisville and Nashville case found discrimination where a black passenger was given a white car with wash basins while whites had such facilities, and a separate smoking compartment for whites was provided. the commission ordered equal amenities for black passengers paying first class fare. The decision also aims to improve immigrant travel conditions by ending crowding in smoking and baggage cars and ensuring foreigners receive proper treatment on long journeys.
