Emmitsburg Looks to Use Sewage Effluent on Fields
Frederick County Planning Commission backs expanding Emmitsburg sewage plant from 250000 to 900000 gallons daily. Plan includes spreading nitrogen rich effluent on Mason Dixon Farms near Gettysburg via center pivot system to irrigate crops and filter pollutants, with a two storage pond and underground conveyance. Opponents worry about heavy metals but Waybright notes no existing local hazardous waste producers and argues regulation is easier before industries arrive.
