State Won't Operate Emergency Hospital For Chronic Diseases

The Maryland State Board of Health appears unlikely to take over the county run Emergency Hospital to operate it as a chronic disease facility. County plans to shift obstetric care to Frederick Memorial Hospital and have the state manage chronic patients were rejected. Dr. A. A. Pearce indicated the board does not favor state operation, citing county responsibility for local chronic patients and inadequate state plans. The closure deadline was extended to November 30, and the county would pay 75 cents per patient day if admitted to state hospitals. Officials will discuss the county plan at the Board of Managers meeting.
