Fatal Boiler Explosion at Denton Saw Mill Claims Engineer
A boiler attached to John H. Thawley’s saw mill near Denton exploded Tuesday afternoon between 2 and 3 o’clock, killing James Raison, the engineer and foreman. The mill, near Chilterns Camp Ground in Caroline County, had been repaired Monday after a crack was found. Raison, about 25 and unmarried, perished instantly. Hasson, a colored man, was also struck by debris. The portable engine was hurled 30 feet and the boiler’s prone end flung 660 feet. Thawley escaped, and the accident follows work resumed after a repair by a local mechanic.
