Stock prices slide after turbulent session on Wall Street
Stocks drifted lower near the close amid takeover chatter and airline gains. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 13.69 points to 2,686.08 as airline stocks surged on a UAL bid, with transportation stocks up about 3.72 percent to 1,406.29, while most other indices exceeded their 1987 peaks. Market breadth showed more declines than advances with 6,3 to 8,7 on the NYSE and total volume around 209.90 million shares.
