Train plunges into river killing dozens near Los Mochis
Rescue teams searched muddy banks of the San Rafael River after a train, known as The Burro, derailed from a 25 foot bridge en route from Mazatlan to Mexicali. At least 99 dead, 107 injured, many remain unaccounted as heavy rains hampered early rescue efforts. The crash was blamed on washed railbeds from recent downpours. Most victims were Mexican and asleep when the accident occurred about 4 a.m. near Los Mochis, with casualties pulled from the river and track area.
