Chilean authorities rushed aid to thousands left homeless after a powerful quake near Santiago. President Allende ordered makeshift camps and shelters for about 15,000 people in towns north of the capital as central zones were declared emergency.
Police quelled a disturbance at a public housing complex in Hagerstown Maryland early today dispersing about 300 people. Nine whites were arrested on disorderly conduct assault on an officer or hindering an officer. No major injuries reported. three officers were cut or scratched.
A California man escaped injury after his car ran off U S 15 and into a median near the U S 15 40 West interchange. Carl Leroy Lyons was cited by Maryland State Police for failure to reduce speed on the turn. Estimated auto damage was 400 dollars. Another Jefferson man sustained a black eye and an estimated 1000 dollars in auto repairs after a Friday mishap on Cherry Lane off Holter Road. Police said he refused treatment.
Saigon reports three surface to air missiles fired at a US Air Force reconnaissance RF4 over the North Vietnamese coast near Dong Hoi. All missiles missed. US fighters did not return fire. B52s delivered heavy strikes on suspected North Vietnamese troops and depots in the northern South Vietnam region. Ground fighting continued with enemy shelling down to a year and a half low. South Vietnamese forces claimed 27 enemy killed in clashes in U Minh forest. five allied soldiers died and 19 wounded.
Frederick W. Fritz Weitzel 63, longtime Ox Fibre executive and Florida resident, died suddenly Saturday morning in Brad dock Heights while visiting friends. Born November 23 1904 in Albion Nebraska he held Doane College arts degree 1926 and advanced studies at Michigan. He led Palmetto whisk broom production and rose to president at Ox Fibre Brush Co. Survived by wife Margaret Johnson Weitzel two daughters two sons and eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements announced by M R Etchison and Son.
Maryland Senator Charles Mathias cites a White House study of converting Ft. Detrick Maryland into a medical research center. He notes Health Secretary Richardson recommended options including a $22 million NIH program or a $6 million cancer research center with Defense acting as a liaison to HEW.
The forecast says hot humid conditions will persist in Frederick County through next Wednesday with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Daytime temperatures will be in the 80s and nights in the 60s, with possible afternoon thundershowers. Yesterday's high reached 87 and the low was 60.
The Frederick County Unit of the American Cancer Society asks President Nixon and lawmakers to deploy Fort Detrick facilities and the scientific team to the Conquest of Cancer Agency. Letters praise bipartisan support and urge immediate action to begin research and move toward curing cancer within lifetimes.
A congressional tour of the Monocacy Battlefield led by Rep. Goodloe Byron highlighted efforts to establish the site as a national historical park. NPS historians Bearss and Rowell, Judge Delaplaine, Schofield, and Byron staffer Joseph Price accompanied the tour as planners push federal amendments, preserved lands, and protections amid new highways and development pressures.
