Washington July 9 The government reported that more Americans held jobs in June than ever before totaling 65,508,000. Unemployment rose to 2,900,000 as gains in employment outpaced increases in jobless numbers, with rises driven by students and graduates entering the labor force. Average weekly earnings rose to 79.40, while the average week length reached 4.1 hours.

Fall Style Previews Open in New York Fashion Week

Death Penalty Added to Anti-Dope Laws for Teens

Congress approved a bill to let juries offer the death penalty for heroin sellers or suppliers to anyone under 18. The measure, not mandatory, expands penalties for narcotics violations and requires surrender of all heroin to the Treasury within 120 days. The bill now goes to President Eisenhower for signature.

Pretty Girls Used To Defraud Man Charge

Detroit reports a federal suit alleging wrongdoing by dancing studios and instructors who lured a man with contracts. The plaintiffs seek penalties from five to ten years and up to twenty thousand dollars for first offenses, with higher penalties for second or subsequent offenses. The case involves Robert Morgan Inc and James F Volkers, seeking recovery of funds from contracts signed between December 6, 1951, and January 13, 1954. A spokesman defended the studios saying dancing requires years of instruction and youth is not a barrier to skill.
