Long lasting outdoor hanging baskets studied by MSU researchers
A two year study funded by Bedding Plant Foundation Inc and garden groups tested six blooming annuals in 10 inch hanging baskets from May to October. Results show water use varies with plant size and light, fertilizer timing matters, and internal versus external saucers perform similarly. The project by John Biernbaum of Michigan State University aims to extend basket longevity and reduce summer fertilizing.

Horticultural oil gains ground for modern gardens
Entomologists tout refined summer oils as safe eco friendly pesticides. New lightweight, low residue formulas kill small insects by suffocation without harming most plants though some species like blackberry and walnut may be injured at low rates. Use 1 2 percent dilution, spray thoroughly on both leaf surfaces, avoid high humidity or temperatures above 85 degrees, test leaves first and expect limited supplies with two mail order sources.
