Mayor Ronald N. Young disclosed a 10.1 percent drop in total crimes for the first half of 1975 over 1974. He cited large declines in homicide rape strong-arm assault and overall crime, while noting increases in robbery larceny theft and motor vehicle theft amid economic pressures and out of town offenders.
Newly released CIA documents show 1973 findings of improper activities were shared with Sen. Stuart Symington and Rep. Lucien Nedzi. The Vail Report outlines domestic surveillance similar to the Rockefeller Commission and notes two new programs at Langley while denying massive wrongdoing.
Ford election manager Bo Callaway spoke in Washington about dividing travel bill payments between government, party, and campaign funds. President Ford proposed a tentative compromise to resume U S military aid to Turkey pending congressional approval. The plan would release 70 million dollars of paid for equipment and allow cash purchases, with bi monthly reports to Congress and a Cyprus settlement progress update.
A 26-year-old Ijamsville man, Anthony J. Leggieri Jr., died when his car crossed a double yellow line and hit an Armstrong Oil Co. truck head-on on Md. 108 near Long Corner Road. The other driver, Michael J. Bowden, 21, of Rockville, was treated at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney for facial injuries and possible fractures.
Brunswick residents faced a dysentery bacteria scare as three of five reservoir samples tested near the Brunswick water source showed algae related bacteria. Mayor Jess Orndorff ordered intensified chlorination and a five day reservoir cleaning with non stop work and retesting planned by the Health Department. Four sources supply the city including Potomac River and Yourtee Springs. Residents consider boiling water despite assurances.
Women of Frederick County are invited to a free cancer detection clinic at Winchester Hall Frederick on July 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. The American Cancer Society sponsors the event with the Frederick County Health Department and local groups. nurses will offer PAP tests and demonstrate self examination to help early detection of uterine and breast cancer.
State Farm Insurance Companies Seaboard Office in Frederick observes its tenth anniversary this week with a Friday meeting of regional management and local officials to review the decade. The Frederick office on U.S. 15 at Linden Hills employs over 500 staff, opened in October 1965 after starting in 1964, with ceremonies and a look ahead to the next decade. Mayor Ronald N. Young proclaimed State Farm Week, witnessed by regional VP Edwin E. Wells and observance co chairs Joseph Ellis and Jack Wright.
