Beetle Invasion Hits Frederick County Town Strongly
In a Frederick county town between Brunswick and Point of Rocks the battle against Japanese beetles intensifies as Lander reports over 4,000 insects caught in a week. Residents gathered more than 1,500 before twelve traps yielded 2,500 beetles, tied to Baker Park and surrounding areas. County Agent Henry Shoemaker expects more traps. Fri day resident James Pearl presented the vial with 2,500 beetles to demonstrate gleanings from twelve traps. The infestation extends to Brunswick and Point of Rocks, with no northern reports yet.

Thorough Soaking For Lawn Is Needed
College Park Maryland July 5 Watering lawns requires soaking the ground thoroughly once a week says Walter Ballard University of Maryland extension horticulturist Daily light sprinkling is often ineffective. With below normal rainfall in parts this season plants may suffer without artificial watering. Summer watering can promote crabgrass and may not benefit some grasses, while moisture and heat favor diseases. Subsurface irrigation and mulches conserve moisture, and well rotted manure leaf mold compost or peat moss support moisture retention. Bricks or stones around plants help preserve moisture.
