Class shapes mortality gaps across American society
The New England Journal of Medicine study based on 44,216 Americans shows death rates declined for all, but the educated and higher income groups gained more. By 1986 disparities widened between social classes, with higher mortality among those without a high school diploma or low income, and lower rates among college graduates and higher earners. Researchers note health care reform may not erase these class-linked differences.
