Luthier turns hobby into lifelong craft in Frederick
LAKE LINGANORE Don Ohlsson, a Long Island native turned Frederick luthier, crafts mandolins dulcimers and guitars in a garage studio. He started in 1931, built Ohlsson Instrument Works in 1992, teaches at Carroll County Farm Museum, and relies on solid maple and precise joinery to produce instruments priced from 225 to 1000 dollars. He hires an apprentice, promotes ecological wood use, and hopes for celebrity endorsements to grow his business.
