Gardener Declares No Favorite as Yard Becomes Living Flower Bed
Eileen Crutchley and daughter Beverly Nealon transform a front yard in Frederick into a whimsical display. They fill a metal frame bed, a claw foot tub, a hot water heater, and even boots with marigolds and other blooms. Children play nearby as the bed attracts curious onlookers. Mrs Crutchley, a longtime florist, tends the patch daily, insisting she loves all flowers and has no single favorite. The yard’s quirky containers include a feed mill barge planter and a concrete bird bath from near City Hall.

Mount Airy wine headed for England
Elk Run Vineyard near the Carroll County border shipped 200 cases or 2,400 bottles of its 1991 and 1992 Chardonnay to England, the first Maryland wine exported to that country. Bottles sell for 15 to 16 dollars overseas. Fred Wilson said Layton's in England will market the wine, with export support from a Maryland program and federal funds. The winery has also exported to Canada and sells in Maryland, Washington DC, and Delaware. The vintners planted grapes in 1980, first vintage in 1983, and Maryland wines are also sold in Saskatchewan and Japan.
