Upland sandpipers return noted near Thurmont
Nancy Stewart reports a single upland sandpiper found in a field near Thurmont while tagging pheasants for the University of Maryland. The writer recalls the bird's historic decline from western Alaska to Virginia, its habitat loss, and hopes for a future return as fields recover. They describe attempts to locate the bird, the noisy wildlife observed, and plans to search again next May, inviting reports of sightings and noting the bird's potential benefits against grasshoppers and weevils.
