General Banks seizes Port Hudson to cut Confederacy
In 1863 General Banks stormed Port Hudson after a mid May siege, gaining control of the Mississippi River for the Union and splitting the Confederacy. In 1896 at Chicago's Democratic National Convention William Jennings Bryan delivered the Cross of Gold speech urging free silver, ending with the quote You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns.

Tragic Greyhound Wreck Kills 3 and Injures 60 Near Arnold
A Greyhound bus loaded with passengers slid off a rainy highway near Arnold Missouri and plunged into a 25 foot ravine. Three were killed and about 60 hurt with several in critical condition. The bus was en route from Memphis to St Louis. Passengers were identified as Jessie Floren Matthews, Cleothas Johnson, Mah and Jack Wesley. Local witnesses described chaotic scenes as rain intensified.
