Dry Weather Beginning To Affect Local Crops
County Agent Henry R. Shoemaker reports favorable harvest conditions but warns corn needs rain in the next ten days to avoid serious damage. Potatoes suffer, pastures decline, and yields top 41 bushels per acre while averages exceed the ten-year county norm. Field days for Guernsey and Holstein breeders are set for July 22 and August 1, with premiums of five dollars per head. Japanese beetles and European corn borers increase pressure, and complete fodder destruction before April 15 remains the only known full-proof control.

Contour farming helps Maryland yields and limits soil loss
University of Maryland extension soil conservationist John Cotton notes that straight row farming over hills loses topsoil and fertilizer during heavy rains, while contour or level-row farming holds water and boosts corn yields by about 20 percent. He cites 1,200 Maryland farmers on 20,000 acres using contour plowing with reported higher yields and easier management. The Romans knew glass bottle making as early as 79 AD.
