Israelis firm on exchange of hostages
In Beirut a senior U.N. official said circumstances may be more conducive to resolving the hostage problem but only through quiet diplomacy with many governments and organizations involved. Israel insisted any deal require three Israeli servicemen among captives, warning there would be no exchange without them. Hezbollah threatened to kill an Israeli soldier if Sheik Abdul Karim Obeid is not released. U.N. Undersecretary Marrack Goulding returned to New York to report on Lt. Col. William Higgins. A Time-CNN poll found 58 percent favor negotiations with 39 percent opposed.
