Darling and the Duck Stamp: A Waterfowl Heritage
Darlin was a Des Moines editorial cartoonist and author who died in 1962. President Roosevelt tapped him to lead conservation work at the Bureau of Biological Survey, precursor to the Fish and Wildlife Service. He created the first duck stamp, a pale blue etching of two mallards titled Malbirds Dropping In, required for waterfowl hunters. The original stamp cost $1 and set a national standard still in effect today with ongoing price updates.
