American Tank Force In First Fight With Foe
American tank units in the Western African desert engage German forces on June 12. Despite heavy fighting, Americans claim at least nine German tanks knocked out and report minimal crew casualties. Major Henry Catol Gaudiel Busby leads a battalion amid intense heat and air attacks as they hold a ridge to protect retreating Allied forces. Captain Charles C. Stelling describes aggressive firing patterns and ranges up to 2,000 yards. The plan shifts from returning home to assisting in the defense of Egypt.

Fuel Oil Prospects For Next Winter Doubted
Washington deputy petroleum coordinator Ralph K. Davice warned that the outlook for sufficient fuel oil next winter to meet minimum needs is not good. He said conditions could improve if submarine issues are resolved or more oil moved by tank cars, but added relief would require heavy additions. Davice spoke in an interview with Benjamin McKelway of the Washington Evening Star during Star Forum on the Blue Network. He noted the shortage could affect the entire region and might force drawing stocks from the Midwest, describing it as a cross regional headache. Tom Foord, 60, famed football official and racing steward, died in Cambridge Massachusetts at the Wyman House after a heart attack suffered last Saturday. He presided at New England races and Tropical Park events.
