Temperatures climbed toward 100 degrees Monday affecting city areas and park facilities. Lifeguard Erin Benford, 17, was on duty at a local pool in Baker Park when the heat prompted safety advisories.
Baltimore and surrounding cities endure temperatures near 100 degrees as a high pressure system traps heat. On Monday record highs 101 in Baltimore and 102 at BWI broke the old marks while Wilmington and Salisbury also saw near record readings. Forecasters warn continued dangerous heat with relief not expected until a shift in the jet stream. Heat-related calls rise as lifeguards and emergency crews cope with exhausted tourists and sweltering days.
Tests on Monday found no harmful bacteria in Walkersville water but residents were told to keep boiling tap water to guard against lingering contamination. Officials will decide today whether to lift the boil order. if lifted, households must purge plumbing first.
Frederick residents joined a family styled Fourth of July at Baker Park with tents set by the Hall family. Ricky Hall sprayed water on visitors while Jennieta Hall and others described the gathering as a family reunion with plenty of bottled water and bug lights for the evening. Police Capt. Gail Rolls, a longtime Freder ick County school health nurse and first athletic trainer for the county, received the Sustained Outstanding Performance Award as she retired last month. She saved a student from wrong medication, helped another obtain corrective eye surgery, and served Mount Pleasant with dedication.
A health room nurse, Ms Rolls, was credited with saving a student's life this school year. While tending the health room at a county school, a student arrived for medication and described symptoms that prompted Ms Rolls to check the prescription and act.
