Tax Bills Mailed By City and County
City and county treasuries began the new fiscal year by mailing tax bills. County Treasurer Charlotte W. Yarrell reported 31,737 bills sent, about 33,000 last year. City Treasurer Louis Eichberger sent 4,500 bills. Real estate taxes total about 16,650,520 at 1.65 per 100, with an estimated city receipt of 1,097,334. Discounts: 2 percent by August 1, 1 percent by September 1. County taxes total 206,246,625 real estate and 12,706,400 farm personal property at 2.14 per 100. Fewer bills this year as furniture tax is eliminated.

Telephone Co Enlarging Manhole at Square Corner
The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company began enlarging a manhole at the Square Corner Frederick City this morning to relieve cable congestion for north and west sections. Expansion increases from four and a half by eight to eight by sixteen feet to prevent traffic obstruction. Upon completion, 2,700 paired cables will run from the central office to the Square Corner and 2,100 paired cables from the Square Corner to East and West Fourth Street. No Serious Auto Wrecks In County
Frederick County escaped serious auto accidents over the three day Independence Day holiday. In the Frederick vicinity State Police reported traffic remained heavy but not backed up for long. Relocation Of Road Approved Near Catoctin Park
The Frederick County Commissioners approved relocating Catoctin Hollow Road to allow a dam and lake at Catoctin State Park. The new route begins at Catoctin Hollow Rd and Md 77, extending one mile east. Maryland Department of Forests and Parks funds the project and expects completion by year end.

Three Wounded In County Shooting Accidents
Three people were shot yesterday in two separate incidents in Frederick County. In Monrovia, 17 year old Rebecca L. Sier was hit in the stomach by a bullet from a brother's pistol while attempting to shoot a stake. she is in satisfactory condition after surgery. In the other incident near Walkersville, a Marine from Quantico, Osborne J. McFarland, lost balance as a car rounded a curve, wounding his wife JoAnn McFarland and Dennis A. Morgan. JoAnn was treated at Fort Detrick Dispensary and Morgan at Frederick Memorial Hospital awaiting surgery, both in undetermined but stable condition. State Police investigator Tfc. William L. Newcomer led the inquiry.

Texas Miss Crafts Flag For State At Track Meet
A 15 year old Houston girl Diane Knight designed and sewed a Texas flag after the opening ceremony of the National AAU Women and Girls Track and Field Championships. She spent about two and a half hours creating the flag to ensure Texas would be represented. Knight said she acted because she did not want her state left out and hoped to inspire others, despite not always being first.
