The News reports Congress adjourned without acting on a plea. Sutter died the next day. He and his wife are buried together in a small plot in the Mo gulag cemetery. His former home is now a hardware store.

Born poor in Switzerland he fled creditors and built a Western fortune before California gold shattered his dream. He founded New Switzerland near Sacramento gained vast holdings then lost them after the gold discovery. While California paid a pension he returned to Pennsylvania dying amid poverty and isolation.
