Magic, long serving pastor of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Redeemer in Paterson New Jersey, has been presented with a $5000 gift from his congregation on July 3. The donation honors his years of service and support for the church community.
News brief notes Governor Hughes summoned an extra session of the New York legislature. A major fire devastated the Casino building in Newport News Virginia on the James River bluff, with estimated losses of 16,000 dollars. In Minneapolis a spontaneous combustion incident among fireworks sparked a blaze that destroyed a four story building and caused about 150,000 dollars in damages.
Sioux City July 3 fire destroyed most contents of a Winds Central Chicago flyer mail car two miles west of Cherokee. About 300 pounds of letter mail and 1500 pounds of newspapers plus all registered mail saved none. Clerk Charles W. Cleave burned about face and hands. Suspected sparks from engine caused the blaze. Drowns Himself in Tank Flemington July 3 George W Mackenbarg superintendent and secretary of Luchtown Creamers Association killed himself by drowning in the association building tank. No cause given for the act.
In Boise witnesses Max Molich Joe Mehelich and Billy Aikman testified for William D Haywood denying Harry Orchard s accusations about Globeville Denver Cripple Creek and plans to kill Governor Steunenberg The cross examination signaled further appellate work as Orchard recalled and other officials testified on the Hercules mine affair and Pettibone dope rumors
Oyster Bay July 3 The secretary to the president denies reports that sixteen battleships of the Atlantic fleet will be moved to the Pacific coast due to anti American sentiment in Japan. William Loeb says the story has no foundation and was never considered.
Washington notes Viscount Aoki, Tokyo’s ambassador, said Japan would not view a possible US naval buildup on the Pacific coast or sending battleships around to the Atlantic as unfriendly. He questioned reports that the Navy’s general board urged such a move and showed interest in whether the stories were true.
The Cairo preacher Rev L D Bass denounces the kiss as the devil’s chief weapon claiming more evil lurks in a kiss than in whisky or drugs. He described a kiss as magnetically charged and capable of explosive passion, saying nothing holds heaven or hell’s fire like a kiss. In Mount Holly New Jersey Vernon French 18 escaped a shaft belt accident at Norcross Edmunds Birmingham Works, after being dragged toward a driving shaft and surviving with severe injuries.
In Piatstur July 3 report Mrs Stella, an Italian resident, describes how Giuseppe Fureio and Prisco Bartirme extorted years of savings from her. They threatened her with murder and demanded money by letters, causing her bank balance to vanish and forcing sale of property. Charges were filed in Brady's court. the defendants were bailed and released, with further action pending.
A New York farmer on a lonely road near Hempond was attacked by highwaymen. He fought desperately but was murdered as robbers rifled his belongings. A dollar found on the body and a torn paper indicate the assailants planned a larger theft.
Sunbury Pa July 3 three killed and many injured when the Buffalo express east bound crashed into a siding freight two miles from the city. Fireman McEville and express messenger Eyer of Williamsport plus F P Hunter of Harrisburg die. Numerous passengers and crew sustain injuries from internal wounds to broken bones. The crash followed a late arrival at speed after attempting to avert collision at a bend.
