Elkton July 2 AP Argument of the bill of complaint by the Dec County Commissioners against the State Roads Commission over the dismissal of a county road supervisor began today before the complete bench of the Second Judicial Circuit. The county board says Richards was dropped without notice though his work was satisfactory. The Roads Bureau replies that Richards was not economical and notes Cecil county maintenance costs at $156.30 per mule versus $86.53 in Caroline county, arguing no notification of dismissal was required.
Westminster July 2 Mrs L Han McDonald an occupational therapy instructor at Springfield State faced larceny charges in Carroll county after large packing boxes containing rugs embroidery and other patient made items for hospital sales were intercepted in Baltimore. valued around 500 the goods were addressed to Mrs Charlies Condon Georgetown S C a sister of McDonald. Hospital patrolman Stanley G Parks led the investigation and Carroll county Sheriff John A Shipley ordered the boxes removed from a Baltimore train.
A wooden bridge span over a ravine in East York collapsed during a Workers Association event after a pie fight and wrestling match. Twenty four people were injured, many seriously, with several women and children treated at the scene. The structure gave way about 40 feet above the ravine, plunging participants into the slope below.
Mrs Blanche Four, visiting at 332 West Patrick Street, was bitten in the leg by a large police dog at the home of William Z Shook. She was taken to Frederick City Hospital with non serious injuries. The dog had been troublesome earlier and bystanders aided in pulling it away after the attack. Mrs William Bradley Stanton of Tampa, Florida, visiting the Elmer Brown family on West Third Street, was formerly Miss Mary B Brown, daughter of the late James A Brown.
Annapolis July 2 AP The appeal challenges the states one percent gross receipts tax from the recent legislature raising emergency relief revenue. The Maryland Court of Appeals heard the case after Circuit Court No 2 Baltimore City. The dispute centers on whether the tax by gross sales or gross receipts from sales of tangible property violates state and federal constitutions.
Pendleton Ind July 2 AP Slugs from a sawed off shotgun killed one youth and wounded another as four prisoners tried to escape from the Indiana state reformatory. One fled to freedom. a fourth hid behind a wall and was found within twenty minutes. Guards and town officers hunted for Carl Paul Jones. Wounded were Robert McAlister grav Weld and Robert Sanders recaptured. Superintendent A F Mitesani Simon Dyer identified the prisoner leader. It was the largest attempted break at the reformatory, Mues said. Mrs Camber Travis Winte left for Annapolis to join her son-in-law and daughter John Spangler Riefier.
