Bank Stock Taxes Spark City Fight in Baltimore
George B Galther Sr testified at the Appeal Tax Court in Baltimore that he was hired by local banks to contest the taxation rate on national bank stock. Judges debated whether national bank stock is taxed at 2 on $100 or at a 30 cent rate as other Maryland properties. The case, seen as potentially reaching the US Supreme Court, could cut city tax receipts by about 12.5 million dollars if banks prevail. There are twenty two national banks in Baltimore forming committees to press the challenge.
