Lefebvre consecrates Bishops and faces excommunication
Arch bishop Marcel Lefebvre defied Pope John Paul II by consecrating four bishops in a sweltering meadow tent, triggering a formal excommunication and a historic schism. He defended his action as an act of survival for his traditionalist movement, while Vatican officials labeled it a break with Rome. The ceremony occurred after Lefebvre ordained 16 priests, drawing tens of thousands of supporters and thousands more listening by loudspeakers outside.
