Court Refuses Shortcuts In Desegregation Rulings
U S Supreme Court actions limit expedited reviews of desegregation disputes while upholding key rulings on tax, oath, and school eligibility cases. The court rejected lifting deseg orders in Little Rock and struck down a major NAACP fine in Alabama, delaying enforcement and stressing procedural review by appellate courts.
New Crackdown on Withholding Taxes
Federal tax collectors plan a tougher crackdown on employers who withhold taxes from workers. Starting Tuesday severe penalties include up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine for noncompliance. IRS will attach business assets only in delinquency cases. 377,233 of 44 million withholding firms owed nearly 381 million in 1957, up from 356,748 in 1956 totaling 279 million. Officials note most delinquents are small businessmen, few large firms violate rules. The new law also requires immediate deposit of withheld taxes within two banking days after withholding.
