National Park Plan Proposed for C and O Canal
A House Public Lands subcommittee heard a senate bill and Rep Dewitt Hyde proposal to turn the Potomac canal area from Washington to Cumberland into a 165 mile national park. The plan calls for acquiring 10,000 acres, expanding the canal right of way to 15,000 acres, and spending about 8.33 million dollars over five years including 1 million for land. National Park Service Director Conrad Wirth endorsed the idea as a preservation and recreation opportunity near major population centers. Local supporters from Oldtown, Hancock, Williamsport and nearby towns testified, while questions arose about dam projects on the Potomac and park regulations separating from water supply plans.
