The Senate approved Alaska statehood after House passage, needing presidential approval and Alaskan ratification. A regional opposition bloc argued Alaska lacked economy and population to be ready for statehood.
Letters threatening the Cuban consul were found after a ballot showing 64 to 20 backed Alaska statehood. The messages, dated Thursday, accused the consul of betraying Cuba while urging Alaska to join the Union and gain presidential votes, Senate and House representation. Police attributed the threats to a Fidel Castro simpatizante.
