Bandit Bank Hold-Up Foiled by Police and Runners in Philadelphia
In a July 1 daytime bank robbery attempt at Fourth and Somerset streets, six bandits armed with sawed off shotguns and revolvers fought police, bank runners, and a messenger as they aimed to steal $16,000. A police officer John C. Mitchell and watchman Joseph Bollendorf were wounded, along with a nurse and several bystanders. The robbers fled in a maroon sedan, later riddled with bullets at Sedgles and Twelfth streets. The fight lasted minutes, with multiple injuries and a chaotic, bloody scene.
