Florida freeze destroys migrant workers dreams in Florida City
Florida City residents like Sara Rosas and family faced ruin as a 24 degree cold snap devastated the Florida agricultural sector. Up to 20 000 migrant workers lost jobs across the state. Many tenants faced possible displacement as rent subsidies and aid faltered while USDA subsidy waivers awaited disaster declarations. The January freeze inflicted 93 million in tomato and vegetable losses in Dade County and 200 million statewide.
