Carroll teachers and class sizes seen as needing boost
Carroll County faces calls for more teachers to reach state averages as two public forums highlighted the need for a larger hiring plan. The Board of Education's 53.3 million operating budget would add only 10 new positions, while per pupil spend remains 24th in the state. Dr James E Heter cites money as the key, with anticipated local revenue gains of 17.7 percent and a 12 percent federal aid cut. A Salary Review Commission urged annual salary reviews, turnover analysis, and merit pay discussion.

New Market auto body shop appeal seeks grandfathered status
Two New Market businessmen filed in Frederick County Circuit Court seeking to keep an auto body and paint shop on their west Main Street property as a nonconforming use from before the 1979 zoning ordinance. The case hinges on whether the shop was grandfathered and whether the men needed board of zoning appeals approval. The town notes the site previously housed Lawson Motors and that three separate businesses now operate there, potentially intensifying use. The board previously denied the nonconforming use permit due to additional uses and traffic concerns. The court date has not yet been set.
