Frederick County Delegation Seeks State Aid for Beetle and Borer Fight
Frederick County farmers and canners urged the Board of Public Works in Annapolis to provide increased state aid to combat the Japan beetle and European corn borer. Governor Lane and state officials heard from G. Frank Thomas and others about the pest damage in 1927 and the need for a statewide program including research, public services, and education. Senator Storm cited local funding and urged prompt action, noting Frederick County commissioners had already pledged $6,000, with total state aid expected around $44,000 and an extra $40,000 promised by the Board of Public Works for the year. Scientists said combined state and local support could fund biological control, extension work, and spraying services to protect farmers and the economy.
