Navy reports 14 Japanese ships sunk in recent submarine attacks in the Marshall Islands area. Two large transports and eight freighters are among the losses, with a total of 572 enemy ships sunk or damaged since the war began.
Mrs Roberta Baumgardner, stepdaughter, files amended bill in Equity Court alleging an irrevocable agreement with late Frederick businessman Robert H Davidge to leave the bulk of his estate to her. She seeks a decree enforcing specific performance, executorship duties, and trustee appointment to convey real estate while naming Marjorie Mannix of New York as holder of most assets under the alleged contract. Baumgardner describes Davidge as an inveterate gambler reliant on family care, who invited her to live with him and proposed rent and duties in exchange for wealth.
The Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, upheld a Massachusetts law banning parents from furnishing literature for sale to children in public places. Justice Rutledge warned against forcing children to become martyrs, as in the case of Mrs. Sarah Prince of Brockton, a Jehovah's Witness who sold material to her eight year old niece.
Thick ice over Fishing Creek reservoir has vanished while the lake at Culler Lake shows a thin new skim after a chilly night. City officials note the reservoir remains full but creek flow is weak. temperatures dipped to 23 degrees as weekend winds ended a brief warm spell.
In a case filed by a woman, she alleges an oral agreement with a dying man to bequeath her all his property via his will. She says she acted on the contract and that on June 20, 1929 she accompanied him to the office of Albert Brown, the attorney, where the will naming her as principal beneficiary was drafted. She asserts discovery of another will after his death would have severed her relation with him. The complaint was filed by Rosenstock and Smith, attorneys.
Berlin suffered its worst air raid of the war with hundreds of RAF bombers and Mosquito escorts delivering a sprawling firestorm across the city. The operation, part of a four night campaign, left Berlin and three other German cities aflame, with estimated Allied losses at 164 aircraft versus German fighter losses around 215.
Annapolis reports total cash in the Comptroller's office grew by 453 600 dollars in December 1943, lifting at month end to 23 448 101 dollars from 23 - 448 101 on November 30 1943, as stated by J Millard Tawes.
In Salt Lake City on January 31 a district court judge cleared a file on a property dispute involving Jennie E. Hayes. District Judge M J Bronson denied the motion for a new trial, 37 years after the case was first filed.

It was announced at Sunday morning services that Rev. Dr. Harry L. Saul of First Lutheran Church Carlisle Pa declined the call to become pastor here. He has led his Carlisle church for under five years and will remain in his present work longer. A congregational meeting is set for next Sunday after the 11 o clock service.
Mt Airy resident Minnie Rigler was found not guilty at a hearing before Magistrate James O Miles in Ellicott City on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor and reckless driving. She was arrested January 23 by State Troopers Frank Badger and H L Williams and released on bail after detention at the Ellicott City jail.
A Fredericktonian couple met in Australia when Pvt. J Austin Whitehill now stationed there ran into Miss Margaret Dean a Red Cross worker on furlough from New Guinea where she is stationed Whitehill is married and lives on North Market Street while Miss Deans mother resides on Rockwell Terrace
An eight room frame house owned by William T. Zepp on Reith's Ford road, near Monocacy river bridge, burned Sunday morning. The fire, from an undetermined origin likely a chimney, destroyed most personal property valued over 4 000 dollars. Firemen lacked water and battled attic flames for hours amid heavy smoke and wind. A nearby meat house also burned. barn spared. Zepp family, including Frank T. Zepp, was present. insurance covered both house and contents but may not cover full loss.
George N. Briggs pleads innocent to forgery charges over the Hopkins letter. The former Interior Department aide to Ickes appears in federal indictments charging forgery false pretense and use of the mails to defraud. His attorneys request three weeks to file motions or demurrers before trial. Briggs, 55, spoke quietly and his $3,000 bond was continued.
The double two story frame dwelling at 205-207 East Sixth Street, formerly owned by the late Phillip M. Handley, sold at executors’ sale on Saturday afternoon to Walter J. Powell for 4150 dollars. The five room houses were accompanied by personal property totaling 412 dollars and 20 cents. Executors Willie Handley Curtis Handley and Clarence Handley, with attorney Walter Sinn and auctioneer Emmett Bowlus, oversaw the sale. R L Kelly served as clerk.
Allied forces report a break through German defenses north of Cassino after crossing the Rapido flood. American infantry and armor seized key heights Cairo and Monte Villa and pushed toward Cassino, while German walled positions and pillboxes were cleared amid heavy fighting along the Anzio wedge.
London reports German colonists fleeing the Baltic states as the Red Army advances toward Kingisepp and the Estonian border. Soviet forces seize Veimain junction and Kotly, with other operations near Velikoe Selo and Luga. The German radio claims U boats sink ten destroyers and five merchant ships in an Arctic convoy attack.
Tokyo radio claimed Japanese army and navy units intercepted powerful enemy forces attacking the Marshall group since Jan 30 with fierce fighting ongoing. Nimitz said surface forces moved within 10 to 20 miles of atolls and fired thousands of shells. Carrier task forces bombed Kwajalein Maloelap Jaluit and Wotje as air and sea attacks continued.
U S Army headquarters said heavy bombers from England and Italy dropped more than 3900 tons on the German war machine in 48 hours ending Sunday night. Attacking from west and south American planes destroyed 255 enemy aircraft while 131 fighters and 124 bombers were shot down. Sunday alone involved over 1700 planes with 34 bombers and 21 fighters lost. Major raids included 800 bombers against Frankfurt and attacks on Brunswick Hannover and Nazi airfields in northern Italy. Ground aircraft destruction in Italy exceeded total American losses in the period.
