Washington January 30 The British ambassador at St Petersburg quotes Russia’s forthcoming reply to Japan as satisfactory, suggesting concessions. The message reaches Tokio and the State Department. Russia’s reply is delayed awaiting Viceroy Alexief classes and czar approval, signaling another critical stage in the negotiations.
A joint conference of Indiana Ohio and Western Pennsylvania coal operators and miners opened in Indianapolis after operators delayed to present a 15 percent scale cut. In Washington on January 30 nearly every member of the House wore a carnation in memory of the late President McKinley. The chaplain spoke thanking God for McKinley’s life and character and urged truth and righteousness to reign in men’s hearts.
Canton residents marked McKinley’s birthday with patriotic school programs and pink carnations. Markets opened strong with stocks depleted by noon. Mrs. McKinley, increasingly weak, was taken to the cemetery with carnations for the tomb. A koral piece bearing Cor telyou’s card rested on the casket.
