Miami Judge Refuses Abortion Law Challenge
Miami Circuit Court Judge Henry Balaban refused to overturn Florida's 104 year old abortion law to allow 20 year old Maria Gonzales to travel for an abortion. He offered to pay $150 for her air fare to Washington saying he would not play God. The attorney said private contributions later covered the ticket. Gonzales, a welfare mother with two children, stood with her five month old daughter as Balaban discussed the case.
