Excess Taxes For Unemployment Listed

Baltimore January 2 An estimated one million dollars in excess Federal unemployment taxes will be paid into the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Fund for the year ending July 1 1957. The payment under the 1954 Act appears as Maryland’s pro rata share of some 65 million in excess collections to be distributed to Employment Security agencies nationwide. The figure is tentative with possible revision up or down by as much as 10 to 20 percent. Robert B. Kimble, chairman of the Employment Security Board, notes these payments plus interest earnings could help reduce Maryland tax rates in time. For FY 1936 Maryland received 555 580 in excess payment and earned 2 505 000 in interest. Tax rates vary by individual, with the elevator-like escalator clause tied to fund reserves. Taxable wages are the first 3 000 earned by each insured employee.
