Five Brook Hill United Methodist Church tutors donate at least one hour weekly to the Carver Homework Club in Frederick housing, part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Literacy Program since 1993. Coordinator Monica Moron notes church members provide over a quarter of volunteers and hope to expand to another development.
A foundation was created to back the Jefferson School which opened its day program with 18 students and will admit residential pupils up to 40. The start-up goal is 500000 by year end, with 170000 already pledged. The effort seeks corporate donors and foundations plus individual gifts as it funds a debt and expands services with local partners.
The Library Board will meet Wednesday night to discuss a new regional library, including location options and funding ideas. Lisa Goodhart invites residents to join the committee or ask questions, noting this is the beginning stage as usage has grown since 1968. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the town office. questions may be directed to Ms. Goodhart at 271-3217.
Woodboro officials plan a concrete block building about 18 by 30 feet to store water treatment chemicals replacing two small fiberglass structures. The town will fund the project from the water and sewer fund, with bids to be reviewed at the next meeting.
Montgomery County Police broke up a large party on Split Creek Court drawing about 200, with 11 charged—10 adults and juveniles—for alcohol violations. Hosts 15, 17, and 18 year olds and 23 year old Jeffrey Khier were among those charged. alcohol to minors cited.
Maryland State Police say they solved a July 1995 theft of a $5,000 ATV from a residence on Catectin Furnace Road near Thurmont. A 14 year old from Walkersville and 19 year old Brian T. Smith of Bartgis Road Frederick were charged with felony theft and burglary after new tips rekindled the investigation.
A 35 year old researcher, Jerome Frank of Bethesda, opened a damaged container of nitric acid that spilled on his foot and caused superficial burns. The incident prompted the evacuation of about 200 Fusion Systems Inc employees at 10 Clopper Road for 2.5 hours. Fire and hazmat teams contained the spill, neutralized the acid, and Frank was treated and released from Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. The building was evacuated from about 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Officials described the fumes as hazardous but not extremely dangerous.
