Change in Democratic ranks sparks talk of renewal
Washington brief by Peter Edson notes prominent Democrats privately urge the Truman administration be relieved of power in the upcoming election. They argue a new broom is needed after long tenure, allowing younger leaders to rise and position the party for a 1956 comeback. The column also covers Condon's forthcoming book, Churchill's Mayflower reception, Olin Industries funding questions, Hawaii Alaska statehood plans, and a lighthearted debriefing room concept.

Maryland county to back new chronic disease hospital plan
State Sen. McLaughlin said Gov McKeidin will ask the General Assembly for a 3 million boned to build a new chronic disease hospital in Hagerstown with 300 rooms. The facility would replace Camp Ritchie, sold to the Federal Government last year, with patients moved to Sydenham and Deer's Head Hospitals. Tax hikes push up 1951 returns and beyond
James Marlow explains how postwar tax policy raised rates across multiple years. He notes a steady $3,000 earner facing 17 percent higher 1951 taxes than 1950 and 22 percent more than 1949, with 1952 taxes forecast to be 23 percent above 1949. The piece traces cuts after 1944 45 and successive increases through 1951, including 1950’s rise applied to 1950 income but fully felt in 1951 for the entire year.

Tax changes compare 1951 1952 and 1941 1950 incomes
The text discusses comparing incomes from 1951 and 1952 to see how taxes paid in 1952 on 1951 income rise relative to 1941 taxes on 1950 income, and projects that 1953 taxes on 1952 income will exceed 1952 taxes on 1951 income. It introduces examples to illustrate the shifts.
Taxes rise and the confusion over rate versus amount paid
The analysis uses Jones a single man with one exemption to show how tax rates and tax dollars paid diverge. From 1949 to 1953 his tax dollars rise while the percentage of income paid fluctuates, with increases of 16 to 48 percent in tax dollars and 13 to 21 percentage point shifts in tax share, depending on year and income level.
