Liberal unemployment bill targets Maryland workers and firms
An administration backed measure to liberalize Maryland unemployment compensation would cover about 39,000 employers and 750,000 workers, raise maximum weekly benefits from 17 to 20 dollars and extend benefits to 26 weeks. The bill would remove ineligibility for workers on workmen’s compensation or federal old age benefits and extend benefit freezing during military service to 1945. The Senate and House debated and passed several related bills on funding, employment, and public works while a bridge demand for New Bridge received attention.

Two Willards Serve in Different Posts in WWII Era
Pvt William Willard stationed at Camp Maxey Texas and Pfc Charles Willard at Fort Lewis Washington are brothers and sons of Mrs Lillie Willard of Thurmont. An election publication listing officials with arrears was delayed and moved to Monday as Senator Davis pressed for more data before a repeal vote. The bill argues lists could mislead by implying wrongdoing when taxes or charges are unpaid.

Rise In Bituminous Coal Prices Considered By OPA
The Office of Price Administration was said to be weighing a quick 20 to 25 cent per ton coal price rise. An eight cent regional hike would cover higher material costs, with nine percent of labor costs added to districts on six day weeks. Variations would occur by district and coal type across Appalachia. Senator Tydings proposed naming a new aircraft carrier The Antietam after the Civil War battle.
