Bitter cold grips Frederick County with high winds
Bitter winds swept Frederick County driving temperatures toward zero and creating dangerous wind chills. Gusts up to 75 mph toppled trees and power poles, blew a girl into a car, and damaged roofs. Temperatures plunged to 14 degrees in Frederick and 11 in Unionville with a forecast of subzero wind chills and continued frigid conditions through Thursday. A 12 year old from Burkittsville suffered facial and leg lacerations after a wind gust blew her into a westbound car. Power outages affected 100 to 200 Potomac Edison customers. all service restored by midnight.

Ray C. Gladhill was honored for 40 years as chief of the Middletown Volunteer Fire Company at the annual meeting. He first was elected in 1930 and received an inscribed plaque. The year’s activity included 48 first line calls, 12 mutual aid calls, 48 rescue calls, 534 man hours, and 1,076 miles driven. The group installed a new 750 gpm John Bean pumper at a cost near 32,000. The ambulance squad logged 221 calls and 4,944 miles. A $500 auxiliary donation brought annual contributions to 5,000. Memorial services honored two members.

Hood College will launch a new master of arts program in human sciences this summer for human service occupations.
